The decision followed a series of pricing and policy changes introduced by X throughout 2024 and 2025. Later, they chose to discontinue support entirely. Several months after the change, agencies that manage active X accounts continue to encounter operational challenges associated with alternative publishing workflows.

The $0.20-per-URL Tweet Fee

X charges $0.20 per Tweet that contains a URL. This is a platform-side fee that X assesses on the posting account and not on the scheduling tool. Any agency posting promotional content with destination links is exposed every time a scheduled link Tweet goes out.

  2. The second is to maintain a separate scheduling platform exclusively for X. Several tools continue to support X publishing, including Buffer, Hootsuite, and SocialPilot. RecurPost handles 850+ documented platform error types. Image dimension mismatches that appear to be valid sizes but fail platform validation. Tokens are reported as expired when they have not actually expired. Video codecs that the platform’s API rejects after upload. GBP posts are accepted at submission time, then later rejected by Google’s review system. Each is logged, surfaced in the History view with a clear error reason, and many are auto-retried.

Specifically for Google Business Profile, RecurPost notifies users when a post is first accepted and then rejected by Google. AI Features Compared

Both tools added AI somewhere around 2023. Later added captions and hashtag generation. RecurPost built AI into the product as a system, not as a single checkbox.

AI Content Generation in the Composer

RecurPost’s AI generates posts with platform-specific optimization. The composer can rewrite a caption for different tones, create platform-tailored variations of the same idea, generate weekly content plans, and produce holiday and special-day posts. Initially, it provides 100 AI credits on all its paid plans, irrespective of the plan, and additional credits can be obtained through add-on packages, increasing the number of credits available per month.

Later’s AI generates captions and suggests hashtags. The output is well-tuned for the Instagram creator voice. Its capabilities are more limited in scope and focus primarily on caption and hashtag suggestions. They do not extend to comprehensive features such as full post generation, content planning, or platform-specific content optimization.

AI Image Generation

RecurPost generates images from text prompts directly inside the composer. You choose sizes for major platforms (feed, story, square) and attach the result to a post without leaving the tool. There is also a Testimonial Image Templates feature that turns Google reviews into branded shareable images.

Later Starter includes platform analytics for the last 3 months. Growth extends to 1 year. Scale extends to 2 years and unlocks Custom Analytics, competitive benchmarking, future industry insights, brand health, and brand mentions. Its standard sections include Overview, Audience, Post Performance, Story Performance, Hashtag Analytics, and Link-in-Bio Analytics.

Exports are available in CSV (zipped), PNG, PDF, and XLSX formats. Furthermore, the Hashtag Analytics tab tracks industry trends by industry. Pinterest tracks pin clicks, and Link-in-Bio analytics include page views by location. There is no Later branding on reports. What RecurPost Wins

White-label reports are not branded in the default Later experience, as in RecurPost. RecurPost’s report scheduler delivers to client inboxes on a cadence with the agency’s logo on every page. Chat with Reports replaces the “interpret your own charts” experience with a conversational answer grounded in the data. Honest Gaps

Both tools have a social inbox. Of the 2 tools, only RecurPost offers Instagram DM keyword automation, which is precisely the agency lead-capture differentiator.

Later Inbox

Later’s inbox covers Instagram (DMs, comments, mentions, and tags), Facebook (chats and comments), TikTok (comments), and LinkedIn. The inbox is available only on Growth and Scale, and not Starter. TikTok comment coverage is one of the rows where Later maintains an advantage.

RecurPost Inbox

RecurPost’s inbox covers:

  • Facebook Pages (comments and messages), 
  • Instagram Business (comments and DMs via Plug-ins), 
  • LinkedIn Company pages (comments on posts), and

Inbox notifications begin when an account is connected. Instagram does not pull older comments due to API limits.

Inbox actions include liking, replying, assigning to a team member, labeling, marking as reviewed, deleting, and adding a comment to a content library for reuse. Upon connection, the system retrieves Google reviews from the preceding 30 days and continuously tracks new incoming reviews. Plus, users can edit submitted replies at any time.

Inbox gaps in RecurPost: LinkedIn Profile, Twitter/X, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky, and Threads inboxes are not live yet, due to platform API limitations and cost. If you need a single-pane TikTok comment inbox, Later wins this row.

AI Inbox Replies

RecurPost’s AI Suggestion button drafts personalized replies to comments and messages. Replies are editable before sending. Plus, this mechanic does not consume post-generation credits.

Later does not have AI inbox replies.

Instagram DM Keyword Automation

RecurPost runs Instagram DM keyword automation. When someone comments on an IG post with a chosen keyword (for example, “price” or “details”), RecurPost auto-sends a DM up to 500 characters with optional emojis and links. The DM can include a CTA button that links to a page, form, or offer. An auto-reply under the original comment confirms the DM has been sent. The entire flow is managed from the Plug-ins area.

For agencies running lead-capture campaigns for clients, this is a workflow no other major scheduler has built equivalently. SocialPilot has DM auto-reply, but not keyword-triggered with custom CTA buttons. Agorapulse has no DM automation. While Later has neither.

RecurPost Upgraded DM automation

RecurPost has rolled out an upgrade to its DM Automation feature. This update provides better control over who receives messages and how users move through the flow.

The new “DM Only If Follow” option lets you send DMs only to followers. If someone comments but doesn’t follow, the message is paused. It gets sent only after they follow your account. This helps filter out low-intent users and brings more serious followers.

Content Library, Bulk Scheduling, and Recurring Posts

Both tools store content. However, only RecurPost lets you set posts to recur on a schedule out of the box.

Later Media Library

Later’s media library supports upload, Dropbox plugin, and Canva export. Media is organized by tags, mentions, and for Instagram by profile and hashtag. Contributors and collaborators can submit to the library on UGC-enabled plans (Growth and Scale). Star and move media are available, and saved captions are stored at the library level.

RecurPost Libraries

RecurPost libraries come in three modes, including:

  • One-time libraries that send each post once, then move the finished post to an Expired Content library for reuse later,

What Moves Automatically

There is currently no Later-to-RecurPost data migration tool. Scheduled posts, library content, captions, hashtag sets, calendar notes, and analytics history stay in Later. Any assets or workflows that need to be retained must be recreated manually in RecurPost.

What You Rebuild

The migration process typically begins with three key steps:

  1. First is social profiles. Connect each client account in RecurPost using the password-free invite flow. The client clicks an email link or shareable link and authenticates with the platform. There is no credential exchange required. Most accounts connect within fifteen minutes once the client responds.
  2. Second is content. RecurPost can import past posts from connected social profiles into a library. After connecting a client account, run the social-profile import and seed a starter library with the last 100 posts. For posts that need to migrate from Later specifically, the practical move is to export captions and media from Later as part of your existing client deliverables.
