Username Generator for Cross-Platform Social Handles

RecurPost’s Username Generator creates username suggestions for 8 social media platforms. The tool is designed to help you generate usernames that meet the specific requirements of each supported platform. This is important because every platform follows different username rules. For example, X limits usernames to 15 characters, LinkedIn allows up to 100 characters, Instagram supports periods and underscores, whereas Bluesky supports neither.

For instance, if your agency registers a username on Instagram before checking the other platforms, you may end up using different usernames for the same brand across different platforms. Therefore, it is better to check the requirements for each supported platform before registering a username. The sections below explain the username limits for all 8 supported platforms, identify a naming format that works across all of them, and show you how to shortlist a username before registering it.

Eight platforms

RecurPost's Username Generator Produces Username Ideas for 8 Social Platforms

RecurPost’s Username Generator creates username ideas for 8 platforms. You enter a keyword or brand name, choose a style such as casual, professional, trendy, short, or descriptive, and the tool creates several username ideas at once. You do not need to create an account or sign up to use the tool.

RecurPost creates usernames separately for each social platform. As a result, the same keyword can create different username ideas for X and LinkedIn because each platform has different rules for username length and allowed characters. Therefore, a username generator that returns the same list for every platform does not consider those different rules.

WHAT THE GENERATOR NEEDS

A keyword or brand name

A style: casual, professional, trendy, short, or descriptive

No account, and no signup

Several username ideas at once, generated separately for each platform

For example, a 4-person agency working with a regional dental group shows how the tool helps. The group has 4 locations, and the contract includes Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Pinterest. Therefore, each location needs a username that matches the same brand and follows the rules of each platform. This means the agency must choose 16 usernames, and doing that manually takes more time.
RecurPost’s Username Generator is useful when a client’s brand name is already taken, is not clear, or exceeds the character limit of platforms. However, it may not be the ideal fit for a client who already uses the same username on every platform because the naming work is already complete. In that case, the remaining work is setting up the profiles.
Platform limits

The Strictest Platform Rule Decides the Cross-Platform Handle

The strictest platform in a client’s account set decides the handle for all of them. X allows 4 to 15 characters, while LinkedIn allows 3 to 100 characters. Therefore, a 20-character name that works on LinkedIn cannot be used on X. As a result, the handle should be created to fit X’s 15-character limit from the beginning.

Platform rules verified in August 2026. However, platforms can change these rules without notice.

A handle that works the same across all 8 social platforms should be 5 to 15 characters long and use only letters and numbers. X sets the 15-character limit, while Facebook sets the minimum of 5 characters. In addition, separator characters do not work across every platform. For example, underscores do not work on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Bluesky. Likewise, periods are not allowed on X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or Bluesky. Although Bluesky allows hyphens, Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, and Pinterest do not.

Therefore, letters and numbers are the only characters that work across all 8 platforms. This may seem like a small rule. However, it removes many naming styles that agencies commonly use, including the underscore style (brand_name) and the period style (brand.name).
For example, a freelancer launching a 22-character client brand on Instagram, TikTok, X, and Pinterest reaches the limit immediately. Instagram accepts the full 22-character name, and TikTok also accepts it. However, X does not allow names longer than 15 characters. As a result, the freelancer must either shorten the name on all 4 platforms or use a different handle on X than on the other platforms.

Apply the 5-to-15-character rule with letters and numbers only when the client wants the same handle across every social account. However, you can ignore this rule when X is not included in the contract. Without X, Bluesky becomes the strictest platform with an 18-character limit, and the best handle choice changes.
Shortlisting

Generating and Shortlisting Usernames for a Client's Social Accounts Set

Generate username ideas for the strictest platform first, and then check whether the same usernames work on the remaining platforms. RecurPost’s Username Generator creates usernames separately for each social platform, so the order in which you use the tool affects how much work you need to do later.

Start with X

Start with X whenever it is part of the client's account set, because a username that fits X's limit also fits the character limits of the other supported platforms.

Keep three options

Username registration follows a first-come, first-served process. A username that is available while you generate ideas may no longer be available when the client creates the account, so backup options help you continue the setup without repeating the same work.

Check the same options on the rest

Take those three options to the remaining platforms in the client's account set and check them there, instead of generating a separate list for every platform and hoping the results overlap.

For example, a social media manager handling a 5-platform client account creates username ideas for X first, keeps three options, and then checks those same options on the other 4 platforms. Otherwise, she would need to generate usernames separately for all 5 platforms and hope the results overlap. In most cases, they do not.

This approach works best when the client’s accounts include X or Bluesky because those platforms have stricter username limits. However, it may not be the ideal fit for a client using only LinkedIn and YouTube. Both platforms allow at least 30 characters, so a longer and more descriptive username becomes the better choice.

Client onboarding

Where the Handle Decision Sits in Client Onboarding

RecurPost onboards clients through an email or link invitation, so the handle decision comes before profile connection instead of after it. The client authorizes their own accounts and keeps ownership of every handle they register. As a result, the agency never needs the client’s password, which becomes important if the client’s marketing lead leaves.

Settle the handle before the first post

Because the handle becomes part of the client's identity across social platforms, settle it before the first scheduled post goes out. A handle change after publishing breaks links that are already in use, including email footers, printed materials, bios on other platforms, and partner websites that link to the profile.

Week one: shortlist, approve, register

The agency shortlists 3 handle options and sends them to the client. The client then approves one option and registers it on each platform before connecting the profiles to RecurPost through an invitation.

Week two: the first posts go out

The agency publishes the first scheduled posts through RecurPost's composer.

This approach works best when the client is launching a new brand because the handle is still being decided. However, leave an established handle unchanged when the client already has a live audience. The loss of followers and broken links usually costs more than keeping the same handle across every platform.
Per-platform generators

Handle Rules for Each Platform

RecurPost provides a separate username generator for each of the 8 social platforms. Each generator follows the username rules and naming style of its own platform, so the generated username ideas match the platform’s requirements.

Instagram username generator

Supports usernames with up to 30 characters. Periods and underscores are allowed, but they cannot appear together, be repeated, or be placed at the beginning or end.

X username generator

Supports usernames with 4 to 15 characters, which is the shortest limit among the eight platforms. It allows underscores but does not allow other separator characters.

TikTok username generator

Supports usernames with up to 24 characters. However, usernames cannot end with a period.

Facebook Page username generator

Requires at least 5 characters, which is the highest minimum limit among the eight platforms.

YouTube channel handle generator

Supports handles with 3 to 30 characters and allows the widest range of supported characters among the eight platforms.

LinkedIn URL generator

Supports usernames with up to 100 characters. It allows hyphens but does not allow underscores.

Pinterest username generator

Supports usernames with 3 to 30 characters and allows letters, numbers, and underscores.

Bluesky handle generator

Supports .bsky.social handles with 3 to 18 characters. Hyphens are allowed, but they cannot appear at the beginning or end.

Limits of the tool

When the Username Generator Fits, and When It Does Not

RecurPost’s Username Generator creates username ideas for social platforms. However, it does not reserve a username, register a username, or confirm that a username is available. Each social platform checks username availability at the time of registration, and no external tool can do that for the platform.

Therefore, keep three username options instead of only one. One agency sent 3 username options to a client and found that 2 were already registered by the time the client reached the signup page. The third option was available and was registered successfully. If the agency had shared only one username, the client would have needed to start the naming process again while already setting up the account.

Use RecurPost’s Username Generator to create and shortlist username ideas. However, do not use it as a trademark checker because username availability and trademark clearance answer different questions. A username may be available on a social platform while still matching someone else’s registered trademark.

The rest of RecurPost’s free tools sit at the same point in the workflow, ahead of the composer and the calendar.

Check that the name and the handle are actually free.
Profile fields

Username, Display Name, and Profile URL Are Three Different Things

Username

Three profile fields often get confused during account setup, but only the username follows the rules explained above. The username, or handle, is the unique name that appears after the @ symbol.

Display name

The display name is the name people see on the profile, so it can include spaces, capital letters, and other characters that a username does not allow. For example, a client can use the handle @brightpathpt while keeping the display name "BrightPath Physical Therapy."

Profile URL

The profile URL is the public web address, and on LinkedIn and Facebook, it is created directly from the username. Therefore, the 5-to-15-character rule with letters and numbers applies only to the username, not to the display name.

Try RecurPost

Once your client’s usernames are registered, RecurPost helps you manage the remaining workflow from one tool. The Agency plan supports 20 social accounts for $79 per month with no per-user seat charge. The client connects each social account through an invitation, and the agency manages and schedules posts for all connected accounts from a single calendar. RecurPost social media management software also supports the next steps in the workflow, including scheduling, approvals, the social inbox, and reporting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Social Media Username FAQs

What is the maximum length for a username that works on every social platform?

X sets the shortest character limit at 15 characters. Therefore, 15 characters is the maximum length for a username that needs to work the same across every supported social platform. Although LinkedIn allows up to 100 characters and Facebook allows up to 50 characters, a username created to those limits cannot be used on X. For that reason, create the username to fit X’s limit first and then check it on the other platforms.

Letters and numbers are the only characters that work on all 8 social platforms. Underscores are not allowed on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Bluesky, while periods are not allowed on X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Bluesky. Hyphens work on LinkedIn, YouTube, and Bluesky, but they are not allowed on the other 5 platforms. Therefore, letters and numbers are the safest choice when you want the same username everywhere.

RecurPost’s Username Generator creates username ideas, but it does not check live username availability. Each social platform confirms whether a username is available when you register it. Therefore, keep 3 username options ready so that a taken username does not delay the client’s onboarding.

RecurPost’s Username Generator works without an account, signup, or credit card. You enter a keyword, choose a style, and the tool creates username ideas. However, you need a RecurPost account to schedule and publish posts after the social accounts have been created.

Using the same username across every platform is a good choice when the client is launching a new brand because people remember one name, and printed materials remain consistent. However, it may not be the ideal choice when the client already has a live audience using an existing username. In that case, the loss of followers and broken inbound links can outweigh the benefit of having the same username everywhere.

The username is the unique @ name that follows each platform’s character and length rules. In contrast, the display name is the public profile name and can include spaces, capital letters, and symbols that a username does not allow. For example, a client can register @brightpathpt as the username while using "BrightPath Physical Therapy" as the display name on the same profile.
