The Bluesky profile bio allows up to 256 graphemes. These are the Bluesky rules to check a generated draft against:

256-character bio field

The Bluesky profile bio (the description field) allows up to 256 graphemes. The 300 figure quoted in many articles is the Bluesky post limit, not the bio limit.

Grapheme counting, not bytes

Bluesky counts graphemes, meaning what a reader sees as one character. An emoji, a national flag or an accented letter counts as one grapheme, not as several bytes or JavaScript length units. The RecurPost generator does not count graphemes, so judge the length by what appears on screen and check it before you save.

URLs stay plain text

A URL is typed into the bio as plain text and counts toward the 256 graphemes, so a long link uses a lot of the limit. A short domain leaves room for the rest of the bio. If a client wants to send people to a specific page, a pinned post can carry the longer link.

AT Protocol enforcement

The limit is part of the AT Protocol’s profile record definition (app.bsky.actor.profile), which sets the description at 256 graphemes.

Two separate profile fields

The bio sits apart from two other profile fields:

The display name, limited to 64 graphemes
The handle (yourname.bsky.social or a custom domain such as you.com)

To compare Bluesky bio length, check X (Twitter) bios that support 160 characters and TikTok bios that fit 80 characters.

Note: A bio written for X (160 characters) or TikTok (80 characters) fits within Bluesky’s 256-grapheme limit. A full-length Bluesky bio will not fit on either of them.
