Instagram Grid Planner

RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner helps social media agencies review and arrange their Instagram feed before publication. Social media agencies often approve Instagram posts one asset at a time, which can leave the finished feed without a full visual review. Each image clears client review individually, while the overall sequence those images create receives no review at all.

Instagram treats the sequence of posts displayed in the profile grid as an important part of a visitor’s first impression. This makes the published order a brand decision rather than just a scheduling detail.

Why plan before you publish
Instagram’s Grid Reordering, launched globally on June 8, 2026, corrects post order after publication. However, the feature works only inside the iOS and Android apps. Agencies working from desktop dashboards therefore depend on client device access for every correction. Therefore, planning the layout before publication can reduce the need for these post-publication corrections.

RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner arranges your selected images into a three-column preview of an Instagram profile before any post enters the schedule. You can drag and arrange the tiles in your preferred order and review how the feed looks as a whole. Once the layout is finalized, you can download the arrangement as a single image.

The planner keeps images on your device and requires no Instagram account connection. Therefore, the review proceeds without client credentials. Approval consequently happens on the layout itself, ahead of scheduling.

The planner accepts every Instagram format, including feed photographs, Reels thumbnails, and carousel covers. RecurPost provides the tool at no cost, with no watermark and no payment information required. RecurPost’s Instagram Scheduler then publishes the posts in the planned order, once the arrangement receives approval.

How RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner Works

RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner arranges your selected images into a three-column Instagram profile preview, then exports that arrangement as one PNG file. The tool runs in 3 steps:

01
Select images from your device, and the file picker accepts several images in a single action
02
Drag any tile to any position until the running order reads correctly
03
Download the finished grid

The grid opens with nine empty slots that form three complete rows. Nine tiles approximate the portion of a profile visible before scrolling, thereby making those rows central to the feed’s first impression. Loading more than nine images adds tiles beneath the ninth position, and the grid becomes scrollable. Within the first nine positions, removal clears the slot and leaves the surrounding tiles in place.

RecurPost renders every tile as a vertical rectangle rather than a square. This shape follows Instagram’s current profile grid, which replaced square thumbnails with portrait thumbnails. The preview therefore reflects the cropping your client reviews on the live profile.

The download captures the complete grid, including any tiles positioned below the visible scroll area. RecurPost also hides the remove controls during capture, which keeps the exported file presentable for client approval. The file arrives as instagram-grid.png in your downloads folder.

RecurPost processes every image inside your browser and transmits nothing to a server. The planner consequently requires no RecurPost account, Instagram connection, or client credentials.

The planner addresses the stage at which approved images already exist, and only the running order remains undecided. Image creation belongs to an earlier stage, which RecurPost handles through RecurPost Compose.

Why the Planner Previews Portrait Tiles Instead of Squares

RecurPost renders every tile in the planner as a portrait rectangle, because Instagram no longer displays square thumbnails on profile grids. Instagram moved profile grid thumbnails from 1:1 square to 3:4 portrait. The change applies to every account, and no setting restores the square layout.

Instagram crops each thumbnail to 3:4 by default, regardless of the original image dimensions. A 4:5 portrait image at 1080 by 1350 pixels is slightly wider than 3:4 relative to its height. Instagram therefore trims roughly 34 pixels from each side, which leaves a safe area of about 1012 by 1350 pixels. A 1:1 square image loses about a quarter of its width to the same crop. On the other hand, a 1.91:1 landscape image loses close to 60 percent, and any subject near an edge disappears from the grid entirely.

Instagram does permit manual adjustment of individual thumbnails after publishing. This control repositions the crop inside the 3:4 frame, though it never widens the frame itself.

Why 1080 by 1350 is the working size
A 3:4 upload at 1080 by 1440 pixels fills the tile without any crop, yet that option remains unavailable to schedulers. Instagram’s publishing API accepts aspect ratios between 4:5 and 1.91:1 only, and 3:4 measures 0.75 against a floor of 0.8.

Agencies scheduling through RecurPost therefore work at 1080 by 1350 pixels, the tallest portrait shape that satisfies both the grid and the API. Every scheduled image consequently reaches the grid slightly trimmed, which makes centered framing a requirement rather than a preference.

The 3:4 crop can affect how each image appears in its assigned position. A photograph that reads well in the feed can lose its balance inside a grid tile. This imbalance becomes visible only when the tiles appear together.

RecurPost’s planner is reliable for running order, for color rhythm across a row, and for identifying which image lands in a corner. The planner is not a pixel-exact crop simulator, because its tiles render marginally narrower than Instagram’s 3:4 measurement. It is advisable to crop the image before uploading it when the original framing is tight. Notably, exact dimensions for every Instagram format appear in the Instagram Post Size Guide.

Client-safe by default

Client Images Never Leave Your Computer

RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner reads your images inside the browser and transmits none of them to a server. A notice above the upload button states this directly, and the same design explains why the planner requires no account.

Your browser reads each selected file locally and renders it directly into the grid. The download function then converts the arranged grid into a PNG file on your own machine. Neither stage contacts RecurPost’s servers, because the planner contains no upload request of any kind.

RecurPost therefore requires no login, no connected Instagram profile, and no payment card. The planner remains free, the exported file carries no watermark, and no trial period applies. This arrangement suits pre-announcement planning, embargoed campaigns, and pitches for prospects who have not signed up. Client assets under NDA reach no vendor infrastructure at any point in the process.

The trade-off
RecurPost stores nothing from the planner, and the tool writes no browser storage either. Your arrangement exists only while the tab remains open, and closing or refreshing the page discards it. A colleague cannot open your arrangement, because no shared record of it exists.

For record-keeping purposes, download the grid image before you close the tab, because that file is the only record the planner produces. If you need to retain the grid beyond a single session, save it within the platform. This is where RecurPost Workspace Management keeps each client account separate.

What the Grid Planner Does Not Do

Agencies adopt free planning tools mid-workflow and discover the boundaries only after committing time to an arrangement. RecurPost’s Instagram Grid Planner carries a narrow and fixed scope, which makes those boundaries knowable before you begin. The planner settles the running order, and it performs no other function. Every remaining stage of Instagram publishing belongs to a different part of RecurPost.

Seven limits mentioned below define the tool, and each one corresponds to a stage RecurPost handles elsewhere.

What the planner does not doReasonWhere RecurPost covers it
Accept video filesThe upload field accepts image formats onlySupply a still Reels cover, then publish through the Instagram Scheduler
Control cropping or framingEvery tile center-crops automaticallyCrop to 1080 x 1350 pixels before upload
Hold captions or hashtagsThe tool carries no text fieldsRecurPost Compose

Save your arrangementNothing is written to the browser or a serverDownload the grid image, or use the Instagram Grid Calendar
Display a client’s live gridThe grid opens empty and reads local files onlyInstagram Grid Calendar
Share a working linkNo shared record of the arrangement existsRecurPost Collaborate & Engage

The final two limits deserve particular attention. A client’s existing posts occupy the grid until new content pushes them down, and the planner never displays that transition. The exported PNG also remains the only artifact you can circulate, which makes approval a one-way exchange rather than a shared review.

Turning a Planned Grid into a Scheduled Instagram Feed

The planned order exists only as a downloaded image, and that image cannot publish anything itself. Agencies therefore rebuild the sequence inside a scheduler, where posts are queued individually. This additional step makes it more difficult to preserve the intended order.

RecurPost closes this gap in the composer, where each tile becomes a scheduled Instagram post. You build the posts in the order established by the planner, and RecurPost’s Instagram Grid view then displays that same grid with publish dates attached.

The arrangement maps to three Instagram formats
  1. Feed posts
  2. Carousels
  3. Reels

Each of these occupies a tile on the profile grid. RecurPost auto-publishes Stories on the same schedule, though Stories never appear in the grid. This is primarily because Instagram excludes them from the profile view. Furthermore, RecurPost also caps a scheduled carousel at 10 images or videos, and media beyond the tenth does not publish.

RecurPost onboards a client’s Instagram account by email invitation or link. The client connects the account personally, and no password changes hands between agency and client. This model removes credential rotation from the offboarding process entirely.

RecurPost loads a planned batch in a single pass through bulk scheduling, which accepts up to 250 posts per import. RecurPost also maps more than 850 platform errors. A failed Instagram post therefore reports a named cause and a fix, rather than remaining silent in the queue with a launch date attached.

This handoff earns its setup when you plan the same client account repeatedly. The grid then remains alongside the queue rather than being rebuilt each month. A single mock-up for an unsigned prospect requires none of it. The free planner covers that work, and RecurPost’s Instagram Scheduler becomes relevant once the prospect signs.

Sending the Grid to a Client for Sign-off

RecurPost exports the grid with no watermark, therefore the downloaded image drops straight into a client email or a pitch deck. Clients who cannot picture a feed from a list of filenames can approve a picture of it in one reply. The rest of RecurPost’s free tools sit at RecurPost free tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eight answers on what the planner does, where images go, and where scheduling begins.

What does RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner do?

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner arranges images you select into a three-column preview of an Instagram profile grid. You drag tiles to change the running order and download the finished grid as one image. It is free and it needs no account.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner needs no account and no connected Instagram profile. You open the page and start selecting images. An account is only needed later, when you want RecurPost to schedule and publish the posts.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner reads your images in the browser and does not upload them. Your files stay on your device throughout. This is what makes it usable for embargoed client work.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner does not schedule or publish, because it never connects to Instagram. It produces a running order and a downloadable grid image. RecurPost’s Instagram scheduler handles the publishing.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner keeps nothing after you close the tab, because nothing was stored in the first place. Download the grid image before you leave. Arrangements that need to persist across a week belong in RecurPost, where the grid sits beside the scheduled posts.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner arranges images that are not yet posted. On the other hand, RecurPost’s Instagram grid calendar rearranges posts that are already scheduled. Dragging a tile in the planner changes a picture. Dragging a post in the grid calendar changes when it is published.

Instagram’s profile grid shows 3:4 portrait thumbnails, so a portrait image fills the tile and a square image gets trimmed at the sides. Upload 4:5 at 1080 by 1350 pixels for the best result across both the feed and the grid. Keep faces, logos, and text away from the edges either way.

RecurPost’s Instagram grid planner exports the grid without a watermark. The image is yours to send to a client or drop into a deck. RecurPost adds no branding to it.
